Germplasm

Full training materials about germplasm and DeltaBreed can be found in text form can be found at this link: Germplasm.

Highlights from that training as well as videos can be accessed on this webpage.

Learning Targets for this training module:

  • Download the germplasm template and add required germplasm information.
  • Import germplasm, search germplasm and use the pedigree viewer.
  • Download germplasm lists and use the GID and/or entry numbers to append pedigree information.
  • Create a list of germplasm that already exists in DeltaBreed.

Germplasm is defined as any biological unit capable of reproduction via any method: sexual, asexual, natural and artificial. Germplasm can be defined as an individual, clone, family or population. Germplasm may exist in situ, vivo or vitro; reside in inventory; or no longer exist (historical record) or yest to exist (planned crosses). Germplasm is created via a breeding method known or unknown (ie. crossing, cloning, open pollination, double haploid, etc).

Please note that germplasm and ontology must be uploaded into DeltaBreed before you attempt to upload experiments or observations.

Germplasm Template

All templates, including the germplasm template can be found on the import screen within DeltaBreed.

Please note:

GID: This is a unique system assigned germplasm identifier for your program. It increases sequentially each time you add germplasm to your program.

Entry number: Refers to the order of the germplasm in the single entry that you are importing. You can input those numbers into your document before you upload if you want to add pedigree information of germplasm that isn’t already in the system. If you leave entry number blank, the system will assign using sequential numbers for that data import (ie: 1, 2, 3, 4…) based on the row order.

The germplasm template is used to upload germplasm details into DeltaBreed. Please note that germplasm name, breeding method and source are all required for upload into DeltaBreed. Breeding Insight also strongly encourages pedigree connections be added upon initial import, though this information can be added at a later time.

The DeltaBreed user interface allows users to upload germplasm, view germplasm details, and search for germplasm details.

Add pedigree connections

Pedigree connections can be imported when a user is first uploaded germplasm into DeltaBreed by using parental entry numbers. It can also be added at a later time by using GIDs (the DeltaBreed system assigned identifier). If you have any questions or concerns about adding pedigree connections, please reach out to your BI Coordinator.
